Was productivity eclipsed this week?

By Abbie Hatch, Marketing Manager for RoboHead

North America’s solar eclipse this week was projected to create a $6 billion dollar spending boom. But as workers stepped out into office park parking lots or took the day off to drive into the path of totality, it also caused a productivity drop of at least 10% from expected rates, at least for marketing and creative workers. This measurement comes from the RoboHead 10000, an index that tracks 10,000 professionals in the marketing and creative industries.

The Dark Side
While Mondays are notoriously one of the worst days for productivity in this field, yesterday’s numbers were at least 10% below what we would expect to see, based on past performance for similar dates in April. This deviation shows that extraordinary events can have on creative output, especially in industries dependent on creativity and human inputs.

Bright Spots
Despite the temporary lull, it’s crucial to recognize the broader trend of increasing productivity levels since April 2020, when many industries faced unprecedented challenges. Historically, Tuesdays are the most productive day for marketing professionals, offering a ripe opportunity for rebounding from any short-term disruptions. This pattern suggests a resilient capacity within these fields to recuperate swiftly from fleeting distractions, such as an eclipse.

Accounting for Significant Events in Your Project Schedule

Depending on how far into your career you are, you may be unlikely to experience the effects of a solar eclipse on your workplace productivity, but that doesn’t mean significant events won’t take place for your team members. Team celebrations, school closures, and weather events are just a few examples of events that may subtract from your team’s capacity, even though they may or may not require formal planned time off.

  • Adopt a broader view of productivity: Evaluate performance on a weekly basis to accommodate for days with inevitable fluctuations.
  • Leverage technology: Utilize project management tools like RoboHead for coordinating asynchronous tasks, ensuring continuity despite individual schedules.
  • Cultivate trust and autonomy: Encourage a culture where team members are entrusted to fulfill their responsibilities, fostering a sense of ownership and commitment.
  • Stay adaptable and inclusive: Regularly reassess project timelines and be open to adjusting milestones in alignment with your team’s needs and significant events that matter to them.

About the Index:

RoboHead 10000 tracks marketing activity in real-time across industries, geographies, and company sizes during a given time period. In order to account for continuously adding new users, the raw data is averaged by two ratios, involving users and accounts,  in order to normalize the resulting data. At the beginning of the year for each time period (daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly), 100 has been assigned as a constant, so that all future data for that period will be measured against that relative value.
